Tolling

Briefly described it works as follows: The hunter builds a blind on the shore. When a flock of birds appears, he allows them some time to settle before he starts to "show" the dog. When the birds have come to rest, the hunter throws a stick or a ball out onto the shore and then sends the dog to retrieve. Sometimes it takes just one retrieve when other times a good number is needed to catch the interest of the birds.

Once the flock detected the dog, they starts to move toward the shore. The hunter now calls the dog back safely in the blind. When the birds have been shot, the dog is sent to retrieve the downed birds.

The Swedish Spaniel- and Retrieverclub arranges official Tollingtests.
